Helping an adult to improve his or her literacy skills can be an extraordinarily rewarding process that has resounding effects on both you and your student for a lifetime. More than reading, writing or mathematics, improved literacy leads to greater self-confidence and employability.
No experience is necessary to become a Literacy Volunteers tutor. We regularly sponsor tutor training workshops that include 12 hours of classroom instruction and 6 hours of self-guided study exercises. Upon completion, you will be matched with a student based on several factors, including time and location preferences.
We ask our tutors to make two simple commitments:
And with these commitments, you will make a difference.
We will train you to work with adult Basic Literacy learners or English as a Second Language (ESL) learners who need your help. We provide 18 hours of training before matching you with a learner, and we will stay with you after training. You will receive guidance and support when you need it, from our staff and experienced tutors who are glad to share what they have learned.
Our staff is always available via phone or email, and will regularly ask you for feedback. Your training can continue during quarterly in-service workshops offered on a variety of topics. Experienced tutors often share tips and tools, too.
You will feel satisfied knowing that you are helping another person’s life by giving them the skills they need to achieve independence.
